| Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is among the top contractors
in the missile defense arena. One of the most significant
advancements in the U. S. missile defense capability is attributed
to the sector's complex battle management system currently
being developed for the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD)
portion of the U.S. missile defense program. Known as the
GMD Fire Control/Communications System, this system integrates
all components and guides the interceptors until their on-board
sensors acquire the targets. The software coordinates sensor
and interceptor operations during flight, providing vital
information such as battle management displays and situation
awareness data to commanders.
