Dan Leaf is sector vice president for strategic initiatives with Northrop Grumman Mission Systems sector in Reston, Va. In this key leadership role, Mr. Leaf promotes the identification, creation and extension of the sector’s competitive advantages in the market place.
He also concentrates on expanding industry and government awareness of Mission Systems capabilities. In addition, he contributes to the development of Mission Systems strategic plans and provides assessments of present and potential opportunities in the U.S. Air Force, joint and international market space.
Prior to joining Northrop Grumman in 2008, Mr. Leaf completed 34 years of service with the Air Force, retiring as a lieutenant general after serving as deputy commander, U.S. Pacific Command, Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii. Before that, he served as vice commander, Air Force Space Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.
He was the director of operational requirements for the Air Force from 2000 to 2003. Among other positions, Mr. Leaf commanded seven units at various levels, served as a faculty member for the Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and was an F-15C instructor pilot.
His operational experience includes duty as director of operations for Joint Task Force-Southwest Asia, F-15C missions over Southern Iraq during sanction enforcement operations, and F-16CJ Operation Northern Watch suppression of enemy air defense missions over Northern Iraq. As 31st Air Expeditionary Wing commander, he flew and led F-16CG strikes during the Kosovo war. He also served as the senior airman with the land component commander during the initial combat operations of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Mr. Leaf is a command pilot with more than 3,600 flight hours. In addition to the 31st Air Expeditionary Wing, he has commanded a flight, two squadrons, an operations group and two fighter wings.
Mr. Leaf has received numerous awards and decorations, including the Secretary of the Air Force Leadership Award, the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit and Air Medal.
He earned his Bachelor of Science in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master of Arts degree in military art science from the Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, where he was an honor graduate. His written work includes Unity of Command and Interdiction (Air University Press) and many articles and papers.
